![]() This led me to the conclusion that there are some packages installed with the Cinnamon DE that provide the additional DNS settings or functionality required by the VPN client to successfully connect that aren't installed with either Star or MIYO. Which is fine, but I prefer Star for certain hardware configurations and systems that I maintain. Interestingly, when I use a Devuan installation with the Cinnamon DE, the client connects and works as intended right after having been installed. ![]() The errors involve the inability for the client to resolve DNS pathing, and sends the client into a 'checking DNS' loop, continually trying and failing to connect. The client itself is a GUI which uses openvpn, and allows for one click enabling of a network lock and other options, which I prefer to connecting via cli. The same failure to connect occurs when using MIYO, also a light and minimal distro. I always employ a VPN when connected to the internet and for reasons unknown to me, when I use the VPN client of airVPN, which is called Eddie on Star LInux ( ), it refuses to connect unless I disable some protections of the client, thus negating the whole point of using the thing in the first place. With that having been said, I decided to post and ask for input on a matter. My aversion to all things poettering led me to Devuan, and plan to deploy it on some of the computers in my home, but I still consider myself a noob. PS: Port-forwarding is impossible with a proxy? I think it is.About 5 years ago I stopped using windows and have been using and learning Linux ever since. It's very easy to check with Wireshark.įor tightening up DNS there are: DNS over TLS, DNSCrypt, DNS over HTTPS to choose from. However if you are using certain modes of split-tunneling then you should check where your DNS requests go, especially on disconnects. VPN: in default configuration your VPN provider should also provide a DNS server that will override your system's DNS. In either case, you will need to secure the DNS requests separately, unless your client did have extra options (like Firefox uses its own certificate storage and DNS query client). Using a proxy is legitimate, but I've not looked into it hence the fat disclaimer at the end with regards to TCP and UDP. I REALLY like how without the proxy connection, not a single bit moves The goal was to see who allows binding to a VPN, yes (in other words: network interface, yet other words: specifying a source IP address). After installation a pingback web page was opened: (IDs changed) The install configuration checkboxes simply did not work (Windows 7 圆4). ![]() I'm not sure whether I wasn't attentive enough to catch it or it just blatantly did anyway. In the end, although I clicked "Next" without checking the checkbox for Opera - it was installed against my wish. Yes, you will be asked to install some shady programs, in my case at least twice or even three times. Only one IP allowed, but you can force-disable IPv6.Ī separate word on the installers bloated with malware potentially unwanted products. You can probably find their exact descriptions online, but you need to set these manually, no pretty lists to select from. Net.bind_ip and net.outgoing_ip and net.disable_incoming_ipv6 (default: false) The advanced configuration allows the following options: These are essentially the same client but different branding.
